Howard Somberg - Rothco

Back in 1953, Milton Somberg began Morris Rothenberg & Son, Rothco's parent company, in a small loft on New York's Lower East Side. This was just a few days after Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to conquer Mt. Everest. Little did Milton Somberg know that he, too, would begin a journey similar to Hillary's making a long and arduous climb to great heights with tremendous effort and determination. Just a few days after Rothco began, the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line in Detroit. The Corvette has become an enduring classic as well as the epitome of speed and comfort. Over the years, Rothco has streamlined its operations to become a model of efficiency in the Army/Navy Outdoor industry, with tremendous velocity and a smooth ride. Through the loyalty and patronage of the world’s finest customers, Rothco has grown over the years. Today, we are a second-generation company, guided by Howard Somberg with his father’s encouragement. Rothco now resides in its fifth location, a state-of-the-art 120,000 sq. ft. facility on Long Island. Though we utilize the latest in computer and warehousing technology, we have never forgotten that caring, knowledgeable and consistent service are the most important assets of a successful operation. We have also found that the best information available comes from listening to the needs of our customers, who are truly experts in all aspects of this industry.

I wanted to take a moment to share with you some of Rothco's Traditions. As you may know Rothco
has been in business for nearly 60 years and is full of history and traditions. One of these traditions is for
every Rothco employee to come together in a toast celebrating Passover and Easter. Every spring we
enter into a very joyful holiday season with Passover and Easter falling around the same time we are lucky enough to be able to celebrate these holidays together not only as co-workers but as a family.
Thanks

Howard Somberg - Rothco

In the midst of all the frenetic activity of the holiday season, between our personal preparations and the craziness that overtakes us in the business world, it's important to remember those who are less fortunate than we are. With that in mind, the employees at Rothco at the encouragement of the management collect money for local Long Island charities as well as collecting clothes and other toys for families who have become involved in the family court system. All financial contributions made by Rothco employees are matched 100% by the company which greatly increases the incentive for us to reach a little deeper to help those who need it.
This year, two of the charities we are helping are PRONTO and Hope House Ministries. PRONTO is an organization which provides food, basic essentials and household needs to families. PRONTO offers a variety of programs including the Food Pantry, the Thrift Storage Area, English as a Second Language classes, a Prescription Program, and a children’s Shots For Tots Program.
Hope House provides a variety of service including a homeless center for youth, adult homeless housing, and various therapeutic and social services since 1980.

The picture at top shows our president, Howard Somberg and Vivian Hart, director of PRONTO when she visited our offices to tell our employees more about their programs. Vivian is giving Howard a certificate of appreciation for a donation we made to PRONTO from the funds we donate by sending out email holiday greetings instead of paper cards.

One of the most gratifying things about being a part of the Rothco organization is getting feedback from our customers about the service they get from our staff. Much of what I learned about customer service I got from my father and Rothco’s founder, Milton Somberg, who made it clear to me that if we take care of the customer, the customer will always take care of us. Over the years, as I got more involved in the operations and fulfillment end of our business, I developed a strong desire or obsession, as some would call it, in shipping out orders as quickly as we possibly could. This often meant very early and long hours for me and our staff, but soon the team became as focused as I was on getting every last order out we possibly could.

It was through sheer luck that I met Srikumar through our shared love of tennis, but I do believe that our relationship was somewhat destined though our shared love of business and learning more about leadership. I am so excited about his philosophies that I want to give away 5 copies of his book, Are You Ready to Succeed to 5 readers of Camobloge randomly chosen. Just send an e-mail to Info@Rothco.com with the subject “I Am Ready to Succeed” and we will enter you in a drawing for a free copy of Srikumar’s book. After you read it, please let me know your thoughts on it. I’d love to hear from you.Howard Somberg
